The Diocese of Long Island Office of Youth Ministry invites youth to participate in a special mutual ministry collaboration with the Diocese of New Jersey Youth Ministry Office.  Hurricane Sandy has adversely affected many neighborhoods, parishes, and people in our respective communities.  This is an opportunity to put our faith in action and for youth and adults to honor the third Mark of Mission, “to respond to human need by loving service.”

The Diocese of New Jersey will host a Sandy Recovery Youth Mission Trip for youth in New Jersey and Long Island starting on Sunday, August 25, 2013.  Participants will learn about the challenges facing local residents and community agencies by working to help muck out homes, pack food, or support general cleanup efforts.  We will meet and work with residents and community organizers committed to supporting the ongoing recovery and sustainability work.  The trip will end on Friday, August 30, 2013.  Missioners will be housed at Grove Hall Retreat & Conference Center (www.oceangrove.org) in Ocean Grove, NJ and will work, play, and pray with diverse youth from parishes in New York and New Jersey.  The Diocese of Long Island delegation will depart from the Mercer School of Theology in Garden City, NY.

The mission trip is open to youth in grades 9th – newly graduated 12th and the cost is $300 with partial scholarships available.  Adult chaperones that are safe church trained are needed to support this special ministry opportunity for our youth.  Applications are available online (https://licommin.wufoo.com/forms/sandy-recovery-youth-mission-trip/) and the deadline to register is Friday, August 9, 2013.  Please Please download the complete info packet or contact Ms. Myra Garnes Shuler (Director of Youth Ministry and Christian Formation) at mgarnesshuler@dioceseli.org or 516-248-4800 x118 if you need additional information.

This will be an amazing way to be a neighbor in mutual partnership with our brothers and sisters in Christ!  If you are willing to work hard and want to meet new friends while having fun on the Jersey Shore before school starts please consider joining this mission trip from August 25-30, 2013.  This is a moment to share stories and experiences while “doing the work the Lord has given us to do, to love and serve as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.”
